As Liverpool supporters continue to come to terms with the brutal reality that Jurgen Klopp will be bringing his illustrious tenure as the club's manager to a close this summer, they can probably be forgiven for thinking that the only way is down from here.
Not since the club's 1960's revival under the late, great Bill Shankly has a Liverpool manager made such an impact on its fanbase as 56-year-old Klopp has. Winning trophies including the Champions League and the Reds' first league title in 30 years is only part of the story.
Klopp managed to galvanise every aspect of a club that had continued to ride the waves of competitiveness in elite football for decades, only occasionally making over the top. All that changed under the German and, but for the absolutely definitely unquestionable power of Manchester City, he would probably have doubled his silverware haul during an unforgettable eight-and-a-half-year stint on Merseyside.

Some fans have described Klopp's exit like a death in the family. That might be going to extremes but there is no doubt that once he has finally hung up his baseball cap for good in June, there will certainly be a feeling of emptiness that is difficult to fill. When Klopp signed his new Liverpool contract in April 2022, I said that I would want every single member of the current squad to leave before he did, so his decision to call time two years before his deal actually expires has certainly hacked me off a bit. But this is no time for feeling sorry for yourself.
