Former Paris Saint-Germain player Jerome Rothen is anxious about a possible Real Sociedad comeback in this evening’s Champions League round of 16 second leg.
Speaking on French radio stationRMC Sport, Rothen was cautious about Luis Enrique’s sides chances in what promises to be an white-hot atmosphere in San Sebastian:
” PSG aren’t immune to a Real Sociedad comeback. I’m not saying that they’ve lived the situation before because these aren’t the same players, so it’s not worth talking about the famous remontada, but comebacks always happen, to French clubs and others. Real Sociedad believes and rightly so, they gave PSG problems in the first half at the Parc des Princes. They can go above and beyond for 90 or even 120 minutes. No one is immune to a comeback. This year, taking into account PSG’s level, they’ve even struggled in away games against Ligue 1 against much inferior opposition.”
As Rothen references, PSG will be acutely aware of the dangers of Champions League second legs away from home, famously throwing away a 4-0 home win against Barcelona in spectacular style, losing 6-1 at Camp Nou on a harrowing night for then coach Unai Emery and his players. Further evidence of PSG’s febrility in knockout play was provided under Mauricio Pochettino in 2022, with PSG throwing away a 2-0 aggregate lead with half an hour of the second leg against Real Madrid to go.
With PSG, it’s wise to expect the unexpected in Europe.
Kick off is at 8pm GMT.
