Mauricio Pochettino must take a leaf out of Jurgen Klopp's book after the Liverpool manager revealed the secret behind Darwin Nunez's transformation. The 24-year-old striker has enjoyed a brilliant start to the Premier League campaign despite struggling to impress following his transfer from Benfica last summer.
Nunez, who sees his contract at Anfield expire in 2028, has featured nine times in the English top-flight this term, scoring four goals and providing three assists. This time last season, the Uruguay international had managed just three contributions as well as picking up a three-match ban.
Fast forward 12-months or so and Nunez looks far more like the club-record signing which Liverpool prised from the Portuguese giants. While the Uruguayan is yet to fully justify his eye-watering £85million price tag, he's made great progress and proven exactly why Klopp has stuck by him.
Ahead of Liverpool's clash with Luton Town this weekend, the Reds boss was quizzed on Nunez' development. Klopp said: «The first year was hard for him and for me.
»Massive talent with huge potential but it was difficult to unfold it. Now his English is so much better, he's settled in the team and everything is different. This is only the start for him. Long may it continue."
Like Nunez, Nicolas Jackson has struggled to hit the ground running in the Premier League. The 22-year-old striker, who joined Chelsea from Villarreal in the summer, has featured nine times in the English top-flight, picking up more yellow cards (five) than he has scored goals (two).
