Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo conducted a coaching workshop at Mampuru Hall in Dube, Soweto midweek in a bid to eliminate wrong coaching tactics at grassroots level.
Khumalo said the main objective of the workshop was to assist young and unlicensed coaches in Soweto to be knowledgeable about the latest tactical and technical approaches to the game of football. Other coaches will put to test what they learnt during the Doctor Khumalo Gauteng Ultimate Champs tournament for soccer and netball at Matador Ground in Dube, Soweto on Sunday, 17 March.
“This was part of the preparation for unlicensed coaches to have an idea of what to expect at (Safa) D licence training. I gave coaches who can’t afford to pay for coaching courses an opportunity and exposure to basics of coaching,” said Khumalo.
The Bafana Bafana legend emphasised that this will reduce late development of young talent in townships like Soweto.
“ We want coaches to appreciate their role in building young talent's confidence in sports and society. As a coach you need to profile your players and having archives helps you grow.”
Khumalo hopes they will follow in the footsteps of other kasi coaches who are doing well in the PSL like Rhulani Mokoena of Mamelodi Sundowns. Mokoena also coached Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.
“You need to improvise as coach and take your job seriously because in football there are no shortcuts.”
Young coach Motlatsi Kebeti who is in charge of Doornkop-based side Black Diamond Under-11 and Under-13 said he has now learnt how to develop the structure of his team.
"Doctor has taught us how to present yourself as coach and how you talk to your players. Whatever we teach them they will also implement in their lives."
