Following a second poll held at the start of the week – this time with votes cast anonymously – the Paris Saint-Germain squad have elected to retain Marquinhos as the club captain. The Brazilian centre-back has been skipper since his compatriot and defensive partner Thiago Silva’s departure three years ago.
The 29-year-old’s status was under threat in the wake of a middling spell of form last season, as well as this summer’s squad reshuffle. He started the opening game of the season against Lorient on the bench, but after last week’s initial vote he was back in the starting lineup to face Toulouse on Sunday.
RMC Sport have revealed the final ranking of the vote, with Danilo Pereira (who wore the armband against Lorient) coming second, followed by former outright captain Presnel Kimpembe, and then Kylian Mbappé in fourth place. Newly-arrived head coach Luis Enrique was intent on leaving the choice to his squad, and wanted to be able to count on four captains – meaning the forward is now one of the vice-captains.
The France captain, whose contract expires at the end of the campaign, is back in the first-team squad after a thaw in his stand-off with the club management.
However, Mbappé’s future remains uncertain, and a move to Real Madrid could still be on the cards. He scored the club’s first goal of the campaign last weekend from the penalty spot, before Achraf Hakimi conceded one at the other end to allow the hosts to clinch a draw.
