Thierry Henry was tight-lipped over suggestions that Kylian Mbappe could follow his career path and join Arsenal in the summer, following reports of a shock move. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain.
Real Madrid have long been the favourites to sign him, but so far no agreement has been reached, and there is a sense of tension building between the parties. PSG have offered Mbappe a contract to remain at the Ligue 1 giants but are aware of his desire to leave. Meanwhile, Los Blancos have also grown frustrated at a lack of progress made towards securing a deal.
Now, with Mbappe just four months away from becoming a free agent, reports have suggested that he is tempted by the historical lure of following in the footsteps of Henry. The Independent writes that the 25-year-old is open to joining Arsenal and that he would get a lot from taking the same route as one of France's greatest forwards.
Henry moved to north London via Italy, having come through the ranks at Monaco, but went on to become one of Arsenal's best-ever players, dominating the Premier League for eight years. He would have been nearly four years younger than Mbappe when he joined the Gunners, but nevertheless, there is a precedent set that he could still follow.
The reports certainly caught Jamie Carragher off guard. Discussing Mbappe on the night that he scored his 31st goal of the season in a 2-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Real Sociedad, the former Liverpool man was left shocked by the statement. «What?!» he exclaimed.
