Chelsea suffered their first defeat under Mauricio Pochettino on Sunday with a 3-1 loss against West Ham United thanks to goals from Nayef Aguerd, Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta.
Carney Chukwuemeka netted his first goal for the club with a brilliant solo effort to level the scoring in the first half before Enzo Fernandez saw a penalty saved by Alphonse Areola. «I think today the result doesn't reflect the performance. In football, we need to accept that these kind of situations happen,» Pochettino said after the defeat.
«Only disappointed and the players are really disappointed in the way we conceded the first goal because we start the game knowing West Ham are so, so dangerous in set-pieces, corners,» the Argentine said. «We should be winning the game at half-time.»
To compound matters for Chelsea, they came away from the London Stadium with a fresh injury concern. Chukwuemeka was forced off with an apparent knee injury close to half-time after a late challenge on Emerson. The 19-year-old did not immediately get up after the challenge but played on before being replaced by Mykhailo Mudryk.
After the game, Pochettino provided a very brief update on the teenager: «Now we need to assess him, tomorrow. See what happened with his knee. It was really bad luck.»
Following Pochettino's press conference, a video emerged online of the 19-year-old leaving the London Stadium on crutches. It remains to be seen how serious the injury to his left knee is and how long the attacking midfielder will miss. Chelsea will be hoping for a positive update in the coming days.
