Game of the week: Olympique Lyonnais v OGC Nice, Friday 20:00 (UK)
Lyon’s season has definitely turned the corner. After a relapse in early January, Pierre Sage’s side, bolstered by some expensive winter recruits, have returned to form. There is quality in the side. There always has been. Alexandre Lacazette has been there since the start of the season, and with 11 Ligue 1 goals this season, he is the joint-second-top scorer in the league, behind only Kylian Mbappé. However, there is now even more quality around him, notably Gift Orban, who looks to have quickly adapted at the club, and Nemanja Matić, who brings some much-needed experience.
Adding to that experience, there is now a strong mentality too, as they demonstrated last weekend. Les Gones trailed until the 74th minute but netted twice in quick succession to secure a victory against Montpellier. The omens are certainly positive for Lyon, and having secured a draw in the return fixture against Nice, Sage’s side will be confident of replicating or even bettering, that result.
Nice are still one of the favourites for a podium finish, but they slipped up against Monaco last weekend. Granted, Francesco Farioli’s side were weakened by Dante’s red card early in the second half in the 3-2 defeat, but there were some uncharacteristic errors on display, with the midfield notably failing to provide the usual levels of defensive
