Lisandro Martinez believes it won’t be a bad thing if his old Ajax teammate Andre Onana turns Manchester United into a fight club.
Onana showed his abrasive side when he made his second appearance for United in the 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas. Minutes after replacing Tom Heaton at half-time, United’s new £47.1million goalkeeper lambasted Harry Maguire for giving up a chance to Dortmund.
Heaton was also involved in a row with teammate Brandon Williams after the Bundesliga side scored twice in quick succession before the interval.
Martinez is used to Onana’s confrontational approach after playing with the Cameroon keeper at Ajax for three years under Erik ten Hag, and insists he will keep United’s defenders on their toes.
‘It's better for (it), it's better,’ said the Argentine. ‘If you are focused, you can fight with your teammates as well. You need to make sure everyone is really sharp, but nothing happened (with Maguire). It's part of football.
‘Andre has a big personality. He can play football, he can deal with the pressure, he's really positive, he's a leader, that's the style of Manchester United.
‘We need to be better and strong in the mind because football is mental. When you lose, sometimes in one second, you can concede many goals in the Premier League. You can't sleep. But we want to show something different this season.’
Martinez has returned to action on tour for the first time since breaking a metatarsal in a Europa League tie against Sevilla in April.
The 25-year-old central defender certainly hasn’t been holding back as he picked up bookings for fouls on Arsenal Bukayo Saka and Real Madrid new boy Jude Bellingham.
