Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has fired a sharp message to Chelsea, appearing to reference Moises Caicedo's slow start to life at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool battled Mauricio Pochettino's side for two major transfers over the summer including Romeo Lavia and Caicedo, missing out on both players despite leading the race to sign both at one stage.
Speaking at a trial event for Anfield's new stadium expansion, the Liverpool boss spoke about the current season's success but couldn't hold back a shot at the Blues. «The summer we had, a few strange things happened in the transfer market but here, between us, I can say 'my God were we lucky!' » he said on the pitch at Anfield in front of a small crowd.
After slow progress for both teams trying to bring in a new midfielder, Caicedo eventually sealed a massive move to Stamford Bridge. The Blues eventually took advantage of his preference to secure a league record deal just days after the opening day clash, ironically involving both teams, though, with Liverpool lodging a sensational £111million offer of their own.
Caicedo had been Chelsea's priority throughout the window after a failed attempt was made to sign him in January but amid stalling over the price, Liverpool jumped in. Only hours before the eventual 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in mid-August it became apparent that Caicedo was destined for Chelsea. Klopp had already confirmed the agreement between Liverpool and Brighton before the late change.
