Ashely Phillips will now be playing his football away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign after joining Plymouth Argyle on loan. Signed from Blackburn Rovers in the summer after coming through the ranks at Ewood Park, the 18-year-old was part of Ange Postecoglou's Spurs matchday squad on eight occasions following his transfer but a senior debut has yet to come his way.
Initially appearing that he would see out the season in N17 and provide cover for Tottenham's centre-backs given the current injury woes in the position, Tottenham sprung a bit of a surprise on Monday afternoon following confirmation of his temporary switch to Home Park. It is a move that happened quite quickly, with new Plymouth boss Ian Foster opening up on the loan deal during his official unveiling in front of the media.
It is perhaps not a shock that Foster targeted a move for Phillips as both he and Plymouth's director of football Neil Dewsnip have very close connections to the England youth setup.
«Ashley is a player that I have been aware of for a long time being in the England pathway,» explained Foster, as reported by Plymouth Live. «He was a player on my long list for the Under-20s World Cup in Argentina in the summer. You might say 'Why didn't he go?' Well, he didn't go because he's actually two years younger than the group that went. The fact he was on that list is quite significant.
»He's the current Under-19s England captain. He has got Championship experience last season at Blackburn Rovers. He has been training with the Tottenham first team all season and he has had some appearances in the first team squad on a matchday, which is great for him, and we are delighted he has come on board."
