Liverpool pay Anfield tribute to Everton chairman Bill Kenwright with perfect song choice

Liverpool Football Club paid tribute to Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Thursday night following news of his death.

Kenwright's death was confirmed by Everton on Tuesday. The acclaimed West End theatre and film producer had been on the board at Goodison Park since 1989 and took over as chairman of the club in 2004.

Despite his unshakeable allegiance to the Blues, Kenwright always had a strong bond with the club's red rivals from across Stanley Park.

The Everton chairman had been a consistent ally to the Hillsborough families and spoke passionately about their fight for justice in 2013 at the annual memorial.

When the independent report into the disaster in 2012 exonerated the Liverpool supporters of any responsibility for the death of 97 fans at the stadium in Sheffield in 1989, Everton paid their own tribute with the playing of The Hollies’ “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” before a Premier League match with Newcastle United.

And on Thursday night, Liverpool played the same track at Anfield ahead of kick off against Toulouse in the Europa League as a mark of respect to Kenwright.

"We talked about Everton playing You’ll Never Walk Alone at Goodison Park for the 96, which I didn’t believe would be inappropriate in any way, shape or form," said Kenwright at the time.

“I remember we battled with that one, and then all of a sudden I thought, ‘Hang on a minute - what about He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’.

“The song just seemed to sum up everything about the relationship between Everton and Liverpool.”
