Fenway Sports Group are increasingly confident they can finalise a deal to bring Michael Edwards back to Liverpool - with Richard Hughes then expected to be appointed as the Reds' new sporting director.
FSG are willing to hand Edwards a senior role to head up their football operations and oversee the imminent restructure at Anfield, with Liverpool looking to recruit replacements for outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp and departed sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.
The Liverpool owners held positive talks with the 44-year-old in the United States last weekend having had an initial approach from Edwards rebuffed after Klopp's decision to leave was made public in January.

Senior sources at FSG refused to comment on the situation when contacted by the ECHO on Friday. But it's understood Edwards is edging close to agreeing a return after leaving his post as sporting director in the summer of 2022 after more than a decade at the club.
And that would mean Hughes being a strong favourite to become Liverpool's new sporting director after it was confirmed earlier this week he will leave his post as Bournemouth's technical director at the end of the season. Hughes is highly regarded in recruitment circles and enjoys a close working relationship with Edwards.
While the specifics of the new role for Edwards are still to be thrashed out - his job could be folded into FSG rather than Liverpool - the Anfield owners are keen to conclude a deal so they can press ahead with planning the post-Klopp era.
