Newcastle United looked to be cruising to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, but collapsed in a baffling fashion as the Reds took all three points.
The match started in an electric fashion with Trent Alexander-Arnold appearing to be fouled by Anthony Gordon.
However, the referee deemed the exact opposite to have happened and showed the Liverpool defender a yellow card for time wasting.
This instance of apparent incompetence from the officiating crew set up a major flashpoint after just seven minutes.
Gordon broke through Liverpool's press and was dragged down by Alexander-Arnold, and with the defender already on a yellow, the referee could have shown him a second.
It didn't happen and Newcastle were left incredulous, even to the point that Jason Tindall made a rare venture into the technical area.
The goal, though, did eventually come for the Geordies when Mohamed Salah played a terrible back-pass towards Alexander-Arnold, only for it to roll beyond him and into the path of Anthony Gordon.
The former Everton forward finished with ease and slotted the ball beyond Alisson.
Things got worse three minutes later when Alexander Isak was sent through on goal, only for Virgil van Dijk to clatter into the Swedish forward.
It was deemed as a denial of goalscoring opportunity and the Dutch defender was shown a red card.
Newcastle will look back on their 2-1 defeat as a real learning experience. The hosts completely let Liverpool off the hook, not pushing for the second goal and missing chances when they came.
As such, when a lucky bounce fell in the direction of Darwin Nunez, everyone in St. James Park knew what was coming.
