Arsenal were facing scrutiny following their 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich and in some cases, much of that was coming from the northwest as accusations of a lack of experience filtered down to north London. However, it was indeed Liverpool that looked like a fish out of water, as they succumbed to a three-goal defeat at Anfield to Atalanta.
It was a game which the neutral would have loved for its chances and high-octane action but for the tacticians watching it provided quite the insight into the Reds’ weaknesses and perhaps a blueprint into how sides might look to exploit them as the run-in closes in on its conclusion. Arsenal will be hoping that in Liverpool’s remaining games further slip-ups following their stalemate with Manchester United are in store.
The second Atalanta goal in particular was a strange scenario where Gianluca Scamacca was suddenly in acres of space as the centre-halves failed to drop in line with the right winger’s run. A simple finish, whilst still first-time from the Italian, was all it took to secure the second goal.
Arsenal faced plenty of criticism for their performance at Manchester City with claims clashes between Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s side are far more entertaining and the Gunners came looking to simply hold on. However, Klopp’s record against Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium in the league is dire, in fact, he’s never won against his Spanish rival.
Arteta helped to end a 57-game run in which City had managed to score in every home game prior to this one and his side created the better chances on the day and could have even won. Liverpool look rather one-dimensional at times.
