The start of John Textor’s reign as Lyon owner/president took a blow this past week, when the DNCG – French football’s financial watchdog – announced it would be monitoring the club’s transfer activity over irregularities in the budget it was presented with.
According to L’Équipe this morning, Les Gones are considering filing an appeal to the French FA – however, there is a risk that they could be hit with more sanctions should they fail to provide guarantees regarding the missing €50m.
The outlet adds that the major sticking point in the budget was the sale of OL Reign – the women’s team based in Seattle – which has been valued at €50m but is yet to be completed. The American businessman was asked to provide guarantees for that sum, which he reportedly did not do.
The club’s upper management are hesitant on lodging an appeal, given they will need to provide further guarantees. They will have seven days, from last Tuesday, to file it. As it stands though, the sanctions – which see transfers and the wage bill monitored by the DNCG – nonetheless allow Lyon to operate. For instance, the arrival of young midfielder Skelly Alvero from Sochaux was confirmed yesterday.
