One plate of food stands between a man's dream of training in some of the best kitchens across the world. Adam Jones, 28 is about to take part in the regional finals of the Roux Scholarship in the competition’s 40th anniversary year.
Adam, who was born in Bootle, originally studied Law at University in Leeds, before deciding half way through his course it “wasn't what he wanted to do anymore”. Once he got his degree, he was trying to figure out what he wanted to do and “it always came back to cooking”

At the age of 22, he became aware of the restaurant The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, which had a reputation for modern and unusual foods before its closure in 2023.
Adam headed there over his Easter break while in university to learn more about working in a restaurant. He then got his first cooking position there after finishing his studies. He now has his heart set on winning the Roux Scholarship.
Michel Roux OBE founded the Roux Scholarship with his brother Albert to enable a new generation of chefs from Britain to train in the greatest restaurants in the world. Since it was established, it has helped British chefs gain the international recognition they deserve.
Adam said: “[The Roux] is one of the most prestigious cooking competitions in the world so I was really inspired to win. In the past, I had constantly been encouraged to go into it. You can only apply if you’re under 30 so I had two years left to go for it.”
Adam was able to get into the competition on his first try. As a child, Adam used to be a very picky eater but he “managed to expand his palate,”
