Manchester United are in 'advanced negotiations' to try and sign Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini.
That is according to a report by French news outlet Les Bons Conceil Du Sports, which has claimed the Italian could become the first signing of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era at Old Trafford. United are poised to try and bring in a centre-back at some stage in 2024 amid uncertainty about the futures of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.
As a result of a never-ending injury crisis, manager Erik ten Hag has been forced to deploy a collection of different centre-back pairings this season. Star centre-back Lisandro Martinez has been out since September, meaning the United boss has regularly had to find cover for the left-sided centre-back position.

Scalvini, who is right-footed, has established himself as a regular fixture at Atalanta, making 22 in appearances in all competitions so far this season. Despite being only 20, the Italian has made a total of 77 first-team appearances for Atalanta in his career thus far.
As well as being capable as a centre-back, the Italian also has the ability to step into midfield and conduct a defensive role. His versatility is likely to make him an attractive option for any club.
As well as racking up 77 appearances in Atalanta colours, Scalvini has also earned seven senior caps for Italy. He started their 3-1 defeat to England at Wembley in October.
