Marseille have been drawn to play either Ukrainian side Dnipro-1 or Greek outfit Panathinaikos for their Champions League third qualifying round match-up. Les Phocéens finished bottom of their Champions League group stage in dramatic fashion this past campaign, finishing behind Tottenham Hotspur, Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting CP. Because of their third-place Ligue 1 finish, Marseille have only qualified for the third preliminary round of Europe’s premier club competition. Ligue 1 champions PSG and runners-up RC Lens have already booked their place for the group stage. Due to their lack of European experience, the Artois side have been drawn up in Pot 4. As league champions, Les Parisiens will be in Pot 1.

Should Marseille win their round, they would qualify for the playoff rounds, the final hurdle before the group stage. Should Les Phocéens fail in their quest to qualify for the Champions League group stage, they would instead play the Europa League group stage, like Ligue 1 rivals Rennes and Toulouse.
