Speaking exclusively to L’Équipe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (34) father, Pierre Aubame, has described his son’s passage at Chelsea as “a nightmare year.”
Aubameyang joined Chelsea from Barcelona last year. He was brought in by Thomas Tuchel, with whom he worked at Borussia Dortmund, but the German coach was soon replaced in the Stamford Bridge dugout by Graham Potter. Over the course of his one-year spell at the Premier League club, Aubameyang featured 21 times, scoring three goals.
Aubame described Aubameyang’s time at Chelsea as a “nightmare year,” citing his own health issues, which naturally had a mental impact on his son. He also recalled the violent robbery at Aubameyang’s house in Barcelona in August, just before his move to Chelsea. “His jaw was broken by robbers at his home in Barcelona whilst trying to protect his wife and children. At Chelsea, he played with a mask at the start. It could only be a nightmare year. Now it’s over. He has a smile. He knows that I’m seeing the light again because I can walk and run since my last operation. And he’s signing for OM,” he said.
Aubameyang completed his move to Olympique de Marseille last week. The Gabonese striker joined Les Phocéens on a free transfer with Chelsea keen to offload players from what is a heavily bloated squad. Aubame has revealed that his son had multiple options but is “relieved” to move on from the London club.
“It is a big relief after the nightmare year that he experienced. There was contact with Saudi Arabia, but when OM come forward… who hasn’t dreamed of playing for this club? Especially in Africa. I keep receiving messages from back home,” he said.
