If all goes to plan Chelsea will pay Brighton £115million for Moises Caicedo. With over £105million of that assured and the rest coming in add-ons, there will be little regret over the extra money leaving the club if their new midfielder can achieve what his potential suggests is possible.
What makes the Caicedo story more intriguing is that on net-spend, far from gospel but in this instance, it is a worthwhile exercise, the Blues could get more than half of that back.By selling Mason Mount to Manchester United at the start of the summer window, a deal which divided the fanbase, split opinion and caused uproar one way or another, Chelsea will bank at least £55million back.
This is, as said, not really how it works but on the surface, it isn't too far off. In the same window Chelsea also sold Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for a combined £53million. N'Golo Kante left for free at the end of his contract but also cleared the second-largest wages from the books as well.
In total it means that Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital will have recouped nearly £110million for a quartet aged 24, 28, 29 and 31, wiping out £30million extra from the yearly wages. Of course, the club did have to replace those guys and did so without fail.
Caicedo arrived as the most expensive player in league history, breaking the record Enzo Fernandez had set in January. If we include Jorginho in the list of exits — he moved on deadline day 11 months ago for £10million aged 31 with wages of around £5million per year — then the one-in-one-out method still works.
Romeo Lavia followed Caicedo for around £58million from Southampton. Lesley Ugochukwu beat them both through the door, arriving from Rennes for less than £25million. It leaves the midfield now much
