Mikel Arteta and Edu look set to head into the market in search of a transfer replacement for Thomas Partey this summer. The Ghana international has suffered an injury-riddled season with three separate issues seeing him make just five appearances in all competitions for Arsenal.
A return for Partey looked set for earlier this month, however he was dealt a setback which has further delayed his comeback. Ahead of the clash against Burnley, Arteta offered an injury update on the midfielder, before later confirming he hopes to have him back in a few weeks.
«There’s not big set backs,» Arteta said. «Thomas Partey is progressing really well. It’s looking very good and he’s on the field already.» Given how much Partey has been affected by injury, it absolutely makes sense for the club and player to part ways at the end of the current campaign with the north Londoners already eyeing up some potential replacements.
Martin Zubimendi, Amadou Onana and Douglas Luiz have all been linked, however they are all likely to command a considerable fee. A replacement for Partey is definitely needed, but there could already be one at the club. Albert Sambi Lokonga joined the Gunners back in 2021 from Anderlecht for £18million and after a turbulent first few years, has shown the best parts of his game on loan at Luton Town.
Last month, the 24-year-old picked up a superb assist in the 4-0 demolition of Brighton, but it was his gut-busting midfield performance against Manchester United that would have undoubtedly caught the eye. The Hatters enjoyed the bulk of possession but Lokonga was still forced to defend with one block preventing a Bruno Fernandes goal that left Gary Neville in awe.
