Arsenal's defensive midfield options have shown Liverpool where they have been going wrong in the transfer market
Arsenal have been big investors in the transfer market but in particular there has been a focus in the deep area of the midfield. Since Mikel Arteta took over, Arsenal have spent more than £170million on Albert Sambi Lokonga, Jorginho, Thomas Partey and Declan Rice.
The majority of that though is on the starting partnership of Rice and Partey. The pair began the Community Shield victory over Manchester City and it was the most competitive the Gunners have looked across a full game with their title rivals for many years.
Meanwhile, Liverpool, who were mooted to be back in the mix for the league title continue to have issues in defence. In pre-season they conceded a staggering 11 goals in just five games including two against Karlsruher, four against Greuther Furth and four more against Bayern Munich.
This misfortune has continued into the Premier League season, failing to keep a clean sheet in either of their opening games. Chelsea secured a 1-1 draw against the Reds whilst an early goal at Anfield for Bournemouth from Antoine Semenyo stole the chance of it being second-time lucky within just three minutes.
Alexis Mac Allister was sent off and despite the free-scoring Reds with games against Newcastle, Aston Villa and Wolves to come it will be interesting to see how their midfield without the Argentinian will deal with this. Depth is a real problem.
All of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were allowed to leave the club this summer and Jurgen Klopp was simply unable to replace them early enough. Chases for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia ended in embarrassment as the team that finished 12th in the league
