Klopp’s bravery rewarded
Eyebrows may have been raised at the strength of Liverpool’s starting line-up for the visit of struggling Sheffield United.
But ultimately this was a victory earned by the bench and the bravery of Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions.
Not least the decision to replace Mohamed Salah, the matchwinner against Brighton at the weekend, after just an hour with the Reds having been pegged back level. Salah was by no means Liverpool’s most ineffective player but was below his best, his frustration obvious after being replaced.

The Egyptian, though, is still regaining full fitness after the best part of two months out. And the injection from those who were introduced during the final half-hour underlined why the depth of the squad remains integral in keeping Klopp’s side in the title hunt.
Harvey Elliott, enjoying a happy 21st birthday, once again brought energy to the Reds effort, briefly on the left and then on the right, while Andy Robertson was excellent in a cameo that saw him create the third goal headed home by Cody Gakpo who, after a few difficult performances, was superb in his showing.
And there was a major bonus in the return to action of Curtis Jones, whose composure and quality will be hugely beneficial during the closing weeks. Liverpool are becoming stronger at the right time.
