Chelsea star Moises Caicedo has revealed that a conversation over the phone with midfield partner Enzo Fernandez was the determining factor in moving to Chelsea rather than Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
The Ecuadorian international was the subject of a lengthy transfer saga between the two Premier League clubs after his impressive performances for Brighton made him a high priority target for those looking to rebuild. Following the Blues' shocking 2022/23 campaign, Mauricio Pochettino's arrival meant a dressing room cleansing the likes Stamford Bridge had ever seen in order to revamp the squad to his liking.
Exits for the likes of N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the central midfield department meant it was imperative that Chelsea went out and got Caicedo, with Romeo Lavia another option that the two clubs would fight over too.
A late £110m bid from Liverpool looked to have secured the deal but Todd Boehly and company swooped in with a £115m bid that Brighton couldn't reject and brought Caicedo to the Blues the day after the pair drew 1-1 on the opening weekend.
A few days later, Lavia was announced by the Blues as well, cementing the double heist they'd managed to pull off over Jurgen Klopp's Reds. Despite the pair yet to share the pitch at Chelsea alongside Fernandez, they undoubtedly have the potential to be a dominant midfield trio in the future given their young ages.
However, Caicedo might not have been included in that conversation if not for the actions of the World Cup winner that brought him to Stamford Bridge. In an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandez admitted to persuading his South American teammate to making the right decision.
