Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly in pole position to take the vacant Germany manager's job and lead the nation into a home European Championships next summer.
Germany are looking for a new boss after Hansi Flick was sacked on Sunday following a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Japan.
Legendary former striker and German FA (DFB) sports director Rudi Voller led the team to an impressive 2-1 win over France on Tuesday.
Voller is part of a three-man team leading the search for Flick's replacement, alongside DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke.
Contact has been made by Voller with representatives of Nagelsmann, according to German newspaper Bild.
Discussions have reportedly begun over finances, with the former Bayern Munich boss seen as being in 'pole position' to take charge.
Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern in March despite the German giants still being in the title race and the Champions League.
The 36-year-old's shock dismissal ended a 22-month spell in the job where he had won 60 of his 84 games in charge, leading Bayern to the Bundesliga title and two German Super Cups.
Nagelsmann is still legally contracted to Bayern despite being sacked by the club, with his £6m-per-year deal running until 2026.
Watzke, who is also Borussia Dortmund's managing director, has approached Bayern to discuss Nagelsmann's suitability for the national team job.
Discussions have reportedly taken place over the conditions Bayern are prepared to accept to release Nagelsmann from his contact.
The reigning German champions are claimed to be willing to waive a fee for his release, despite having paid RB Leipzig a world-record £21.7million to secure his services in 2021.
