May 25th is one of the most iconic days in Liverpool’s history, having won both their first and fifth European Cups on such a date.
It could still prove to be the date of Jurgen Klopp’s final match as Reds manager too, with this year’s FA Cup final taking place on Saturday 25 May at Wembley.
Yet last year, it was a day that left Mohamed Salah ‘devastated’. It was the day that Liverpool were officially left unable to qualify for this season’s Champions League as Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Chelsea secured the final berth.
Admittedly, the Reds would have been well-aware of that likely fate for quite some time. But that didn’t stop Salah from airing his frustrations on social media barely minutes after the final whistle at Old Trafford.

“I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this,” he wrote. “We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.
“We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”
Perhaps such a pill was even more bitter to swallow considering the Reds had been on the verge of an unprecedented quadruple just 12 months earlier. But fast forward another 10 months, and Liverpool are back to their best after an £150m midfield overhaul.
Klopp’s men have already won the League Cup, beating Chelsea 1-0 AET last month. Such a win was made even more impressive considering that the Reds were without the services of Salah and so many of his senior team-mates because of injury.
