Gary Neville has slammed Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya after the Spaniard almost allowed Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez a free goal with a shocking mistake.
The shot-stopper, who joined the Gunners on loan from Brentford over the summer, has drawn a lot of attention for coming in and seemingly becoming the immediate first-choice over established goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The 28-year-old has started both of the club's Champions League group stage matches and has managed to keep three clean sheets in his five appearances so far.
However, just 18 minutes into their clash with the reigning Premier League champions, Raya held onto the ball far too long while on his own six-yard line and was blindsided by the onrushing Alvarez. As he went to clear the ball, the Argentinian forward managed to get his leg in the way, deflecting the ball into the side netting.
Raya immediately turned to his defence but the Emirates Stadium crowd became hostile towards him instead, pointing out the error he'd made. He also had a shaky moment when just five minutes into the match, he flew across his own goal when City had an opportunity to cross it back into the net, a mistake that saw midfielder Declan Rice having to clear a shot off the line.
Sky pundit Neville immediately pointed out the errors Raya had made throughout the half, claiming that he wouldn't even be passing back to his goalkeeper if he was playing as he was.
"I can spot a goalkeeper a mile off who is a nervous wreck, and David Raya is that at the moment," he exclaimed while on commentary for Sky Sports. "He's very lucky that that deflection goes where it does."
