Arsenal suffered their first defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League this season earlier this week, losing 2-0 against West Ham. Tomas Soucek opened the scoring for the Hammers, before Kostas Mavropanos headed home to double the visitors' lead.
The Gunners were unable to convert any of the chances they created leading to criticism of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. Mikel Arteta's sideare in desperate need for a clinical striker to help aid their Premier League title challenge this term, but that was not the only talking point after the game on Thursday evening.
Soucek's goal was awarded following a lengthy VAR intervention as match officials tried to see whether the ball had gone out of play before Jarrod Bowen was able to provide the assist for West Ham's opener. Arsenal were left aggrieved to be on the end of yet another debateable decision after Newcastle scored their winning goal against the Gunners last month from an almost identical scenario.
Now, beIN Sport claim that a sliver of the ball was still the right side of the line, using a new camera angle, and the match officials were correct to let the goal stand. «You could see some of the ball so we could then make the ball exactly the size it should be in the footage and it proved conclusively (it was in),» explained Andy Gray.
«I guess when you see that and how much of the ball was actually over the line it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Jarrod Bowen thinks it’s out. He wouldn’t know it was a tiny, tiny bit over the line.
»It was easier to judge the Newcastle one because the ball was on the ground and the line was beside the football. This one the ball is in the air and that’s what makes it more difficult to judge with the naked eye."
