When Erik ten Hag arrived in Bangkok on tour a year ago, the new Manchester United manager was grilled on two awkward issues: Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club amid his conspicuous absence and Harry Maguire’s position as captain.
The first problem was resolved before the end of the year. The second lingered a little longer, but Ten Hag has acted more decisively this summer.
Having stuck by Maguire in Bangkok and kept him as captain for his first campaign, Ten Hag informed the England defender on his first day back last weekend that he has lost the armband.
The man who captained United on no fewer than 45 occasions last season while Maguire was warming the bench or injured has now got the job on a permanent basis.
It was a proud Bruno Fernandes who sat down at the prestigious Pingry School in New Jersey, where United have been training on the first stop of their US tour, and said how Maguire had magnanimously congratulated him in front of the rest of squad when Ten Hag made the announcement this week.
‘He [Ten Hag] wanted to do it in front of the whole group,’ said Fernandes. ‘Everyone knew already about the situation with Harry, but no one knew who would be the next captain. So he did it in a team meeting with everyone together.
‘Harry gave me congratulations and said he is really happy for me. I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him, but he said congratulations to me and I’m happy about that because we’ve always had a good relationship.
‘Obviously it’s a big honour and it’s something that I didn’t dream about. It’s beyond your dreams.’
