North Lanarkshire Council confirms plans to update two community football pitches

North Lanarkshire Council has published details of plans to update two community football pitches, by replacing them with new artificial playing surfaces.

Almost identical planning applications on the council website describe intentions to replace existing pitches at Gray Street in Cleland and in the village of Harthill.

Both applications state that the existing pitches would be replaced with new artificial grass, with lighting, fencing, drainage and access paths also to be constructed.

Neighbours have been notified of the plans, which can be viewed online.

At time of writing no comments had been published in relation to either planning application.

In 2022, the council confirmed the pitches in Cleland and Harthill were to be converted to upgraded synthetic surfaces.

However, rising costs meant proposed additional improvements to a number of existing pitches would not go ahead.

At that time, council leader Jim Logue said: “These pitches will be located in communities where hitherto there has been an historical underspend in new school builds and pitch refurbishment.”
