Goal scoring hero Dion Charles said Northern Ireland played without fear in their stunning 2-0 victory over Denmark. insisting the result and performance showed the future can be bright for Michael O’Neill’s side.
In keeping with the attitude of the team, Charles worked his heart out in attack and deserved his goal in the 81st minute to clinch a morale boosting win – just the third of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign which started with the Bolton striker scoring twice in a 2-0 triumph in San Marino.
Charles hit the post in the first half and netted from a brilliant Conor McMenamin cross after Isaac Price had given the home side a surprise lead on the hour.
It has been a dismal campaign with Northern Ireland losing seven Group H games, including 4-0 in Finland on Friday, but for Charles and his team-mates it was pleasing to end the year on a high.
“That was more like it, it was a great result,” he said.
"It was very hard work but we got the rewards at the end. We went out there with no fear, we had nothing to lose.
"We were the underdogs. They were a brilliant team, but we knew that if we could stay in the game and work hard then we would always get an opportunity.
"Throughout this campaign we've been on the wrong end of the 1-0 results, but we were clinical when we got the opportunities tonight.”
Asked despite all that had gone before in this group, with results and injuries, if he thought Northern Ireland had a shot at victory, Charles replied: “Yeah I did. We worked so hard and frustrated them.
