Peter Crouch and Joe Cole agree on Chelsea transfer priority as Todd Boehly strategy slammed
Peter Crouch and Joe Cole have urged Chelsea to be 'smarter with their recruitment' after failing to sign one of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo or Victor Osimhen. The Blues have forked out nearly £1billion on new players since Todd Boehly bought the club in May 2022, yet only a fraction of which has been spent on a new striker.
In fact,football.london understands that Chelsea wanted to sign Osimhen in the summer but Napoli were determined to hold onto their talisman – so Nicolas Jackson was signed for £32million from Villarreal instead. It's believed that the west Londoners viewed the Nigeria international as somebody who could have transformed the club's misfortunes in front of goal but, without Champions League qualification, any bid to sign him proved difficult.
Despite having recently signed a contract extension in Naples, football.london understands that Chelsea are still interested in the 25-year-old striker. It remains to be seen whether the Blues will lodge a bid any time soon but, as they slip down the Premier League table, the prospect of European football next season looks slim.
Ahead of Chelsea's clash against Fulham, Crouch and Cole analysed the club's striker situation on TNT Sports. The former Liverpool and Tottenham striker began by slamming the Blues' distribution of funds.
«I’m just flabbergasted,» said Crouch. «How do you spend that much money and not have a centre forward? There were centre forwards available and if you are going out to spend that amount of money, there just wasn’t those forwards available.
