Peter McGrail eyes Ja’Rico O’Quinn rematch or British title shot after returning to winning ways

Peter McGrail set his sights on a rematch with Ja’Rico O’Quinn or a shot at the British super-bantamweight title after returning to winning ways on Saturday night.

McGrail was returning to the ring for the first time since suffering a shock knockout loss at the hands of O’Quinn in Arizona just before Christmas. However, the former Team GB star put the disaster of December behind him by beating former British super-bantamweight champion Marc Leach at the Exhibition Centre.

The 27-year-old dominated the 10-round contest with a cut to his right eye picked up in the final round, the only blemish on a near-perfect night. The three judges at ringside scored unanimously with cards of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 in favour of McGrail, who also picked up the WBA international super-bantamweight title as a result of the victory.

“It was proper important to win,” McGrail said. “Headlining in my own city, there’s a bit of pressure on myself on the back of a loss, but we’ve passed the test in flying colours.

“I beat a tough opponent there. He stayed in. Fair play to him. He gave me 10 good rounds there. I’m just over the moon with the win.

“As you know, I have boxed all over the world, but he was a tricky opponent, Marc. I am over the moon with the win because we are back on track now and hopefully push on.”

McGrail had initially been due to face O’Quinn in a rematch, but the American pulled out of the fight due to personal reasons earlier this month. However, the Everton Red Triangle man questioned O’Quinn’s side of events and actually believes that he just didn’t want to get in the ring with him.
