Premier League and EFL ‘agree to sell TV rights together’ with Football League set to land eye-watering payment

The Premier League and EFL have reportedly reached an agreement to sell their television rights together.

Since its inception in 1992, the Premier League has been one of the financially strongest leagues in world football.

Currently, thePremier League's overseas TV contracts are worth around £5billion up until 2025.

However, huge change looks set to be on the way in a move that will support the funding of clubs in the English Football League.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the Premier League and EFL have agreed to sell their rights collectively.

Part of a proposal that was presented to clubs on Thursday, 14.75 per cent of the pooled media rights will be given to the EFL next season.

Such a deal could double the amount of solidarity payments that are granted by the Premier League, which is currently at £130million.

As well as this, the EFL will get a bonus payment of £88million this season, with 2028 the start year for the collective selling of TV rights.

Furthermore, the New Deal for Football will see the Premier League pay an extra £130million-per-year for the second, third and fourth tiers.

The latest decision is set to ensure that clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two will receive funding in line with top flight sides.

Overseas rights is only included in the deal as of now, but there is a chance that domestic deals could also be involved in future seasons.

Broadcasters are said to be likely to welcome this sales model as it would help to provide them with 'certainty over future content'.

The EFL are set to sell their overseas rights on the market in the coming weeks for 2024 to 2028.

After that, the EFL and the Premier League will be involved in the sale process together for the first time ever.
