Premier League breaks with tradition 28 years later
Traditions are not always respected. They are also broken. That was the decision made by the Premier League when it announced the schedule for Matchday 18. Wolves v Chelsea, whatever happens, will be history in England for changing the plans on such an important day.
The Blues' visit to Molineux Stadium on Sunday will be the first competitive match to be played on 24 December since 1995. A fact that ceased to occur in order to help the players on Christmas Eve.
December 24, 1995 is the only precedent since the re-foundation of the Premier League. Back then, Leeds United beat Manchester United 3-1 at Elland Road with goals from Gary McAllister, Anthony Yeboah and Brian Deane. The Red Devils' consolation was scored by Andy Cole.
In the run-up to Christmas and the famous Boxing Day, football will take centre stage for two hours in the lead-up to the best day on the calendar.
