Rice given shock FIFA The Best award nomination to join Mbappe and Messi
The nominees for FIFA’s The Best awards have been announced including the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland
Arsenal star Declan Rice has been included in FIFA's The Best nominees list alongside a host of world-class players across the world. The England international helped West Ham win the Europa Conference League trophy last season before completing a £105million move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have been nominated after leading Napoli to the Serie A title. Meanwhile, Marcelo Brozovic is another surprise addition after Inter Milan’s run to the Champions League final. Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe has been nominated alongside former PSG teammate Lionel Messi - as the Argentine looks to win the award for the third time.
The Best awards are FIFA’s official ceremony and serve as a rival to the Ballon d’Or, which nominated 30 players earlier this month including Jude Bellingham, Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Martin Odegaard - all of whom miss out in The Best. Many would have expected the likes of Odegaard and Bukayo Saka to feature ahead of Rice in the nominees list but the England international's European success with the Hammers has been noted by FIFA as he makes the list.
Rice was also voted as the 2022/23 Europa Conference League player of the year and was named in the team of the tournament. The 24-year-old has become a fan-favourite at the Emirates Stadium after just five appearances for the Gunners this season - helping them beat City to the FA Community Shield.
