Portugal national team head coach Roberto Martinez has argued that Arsenal have grown in mentality amid their ongoing Premier League title race. The Gunners led the league for the majority of the 2022/23 campaign, sitting as many as eight points clear at the top of the pile.
However, poor form in the final months of the season resulted in Manchester City pipping them to the title. But Pep Guardiola's side trail Mikel Arteta's men after 14 games of this season, with the north Londoners leading the standings.
Ex-Everton boss Martinez has claimed that one of the reasons for that is Arsenal's improved mentality. Speaking about the Gunners on Prime Sport, the Spaniard said: "I think they have grown in that mentality.
«You need that certain mentality to play in the top games and not necessarily play well, but win. We saw Arsenal play against Manchester City, and they probably played better at home and they couldn’t win.
»This season, they have already beaten Manchester City, they won the Community Shield. They have been a different team in the Champions League in terms of mentality and they have been a team that can play away from home and win.
«There is an evolution and that mentality can make a huge difference — if they have the same lead that they did last season, I don’t think Arsenal will lose it.» Arsenal manager Arteta has also agreed with Martinez's sentiment regarding his side improving on the mental end.
