Wayne Rooney slammed Bruno Fernandes for allowing Marcus Rashford to take Manchester United's second penalty against Everton.
United strolled to a comfortable 2-0 victory against the Toffees on Saturday afternoon, with Fernandes and Rashford both on the score sheet for the hosts at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were still far from their best, but manager Erik ten Hag was happy for his side to secure victory as they continued their pursuit of a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
Fernandes scored the first penalty of the game after James Tarkowski fouled Alejandro Garnacho, and seemed set to step up again when the Argentine was brought down by Ben Godfrey just minutes later.
He instead, however, passed the ball to Rashford. And despite the forward scoring, Rooney, speaking on TNT Sports, claimed it was the wrong decision to pass the ball on.
'I think any club should have one penalty taker,' Rooney said. 'I understand when a player is going through a tough period, but when it’s 1-0 it is risky.
'The keepers study so much now, Jordan (Pickford) would have known his favourite way, but it is a game of cat and mouse.
'I used to practice and tell the goalkeepers what way. If I know them - I have scored past all of them - but it can be a bit more nervous.'
Ten Hag praised his captain for passing up the opportunity to get a second goal of the game, pointing towards his team's spirit as a positive sign.
He said that a number of players could have taken the penalty, but suggested Rashford's form was the reason for him receiving the ball.
