Stefan Ortega offers update on Man City transfer exit after earning Real Madrid reward

It was the biggest game of Stefan Ortega's Manchester City career, but it threatened to turn into a nightmare when he was beaten by two deflected goals in as many minutes at the Bernabeu.

Ortega has impressed when stepping in for Ederson after his injury at Liverpool one month ago, and has retained his place for the last two games when the Brazilian has returned to the squad. For Ortega to stay in goal at Crystal Palace was one vote of confidence, but to start at Real Madrid was the pinnacle of the German's two-year stay at City.

On one hand, it was reflective of Ortega's recent performances and of Pep Guardiola's policy that an in-form player will keep their place. On the other, maybe Ederson's lack of match fitness, coupled with Ortega's comments last week that he is open to leaving in the summer, meant that it was a risk-free selection that could also persuade the number two to stay in the long-run.

Ederson's return from injury will mean that the goalkeeper dilemma will be a talking point before every game until the end of the season, but Ortega is happy to take each appearance as it comes, hoping to impress enough to keep the shirt.

"Of course I was really happy that I was given the trust here. I think I did a good job despite conceding three goals," Ortega reflected post-match. "I try to do my job when I get the chance to play and we'll see what the end result is. I definitely try to offer myself every day and now I'm being rewarded for it. The focus is just to try and use every game I get."
