Stellenbosch’s first-choice goalkeeper Sage Stephens could be back between the sticks on Wednesday after recovering from a hip injury, coach Steve Barker predicted on the eve of their DStv Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
Stephens missed the club’s 3-1 away win over Royal AM and Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to SuperSport United in the league.
Veteran back-up goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt deputised for Stephens in the first game and Oscar Masuluke, recently signed from Baroka, debuted in the second game.
But Barker said he expected the 32-year-old Stephens would be back for the midweek clash at Athlone Stadium (live on SuperSport)
“He will be likely … more likely than not … to be available for selection,” said the coach.
“Stephens started the season really well for us and had he not been injured would have kept playing. Lee's been with us for a while and I thought he was a competent guy for the Royal AM match.
“Picking Oscar to play against SuperSport was more about the type of aerial threat and balls into the box that SuperSport play. It was good for me to know all three keepers have played and it puts me in a better position to make an informed decision on the way forward,” Barker added.
