Ballymena United manager Jim Ervin was offered glimpses of Steven Davis’ talent at a young age and he always believed he was destined to be a class act for his country.
Former Linfield hero Ervin played alongside future senior internationals Chris Brunt and Davis in the St. Andrews side when the young teenagers developed a huge passion for the game.
As the long serving Northern Ireland skipper brings the curtain down on his glittering career, Ervin still cherishes the warm memories of learning the game alongside the boy from Cullybackey.
“Joe Kincaid was renowned for bringing top players from around the country to the Shankill Road and I always remember Steve Davis being part of the team alongside Chris Brunt as well,” said Ervin.
“He was a young lad but even back then he always stood out. He had the right attitude, quality and professionalism to the point that you always knew he had an exciting career in the game ahead of him.
“I’ll never forget when Steve was about 14, Joe stood up in front of the teams and said that Steve Davis would go on and captain his country. Back then it was a big statement to make but it was true.
“It shows you the knack Joe had of recruiting players and spotting quality lads like Steve.
“Nothing ever fazed Steven. No game or opponent was too big for him, he was so quiet and humble but knew his role in the team. He went about his business in a calm way and enjoyed the game.
“Sometimes you don’t know how kids will develop but Steven went on to achieve great success while remaining grounded.”
