Tommy Wright and Gareth McAuley
I’M particularly encouraged by the appointments of Thomas Wright (NI Under-21s) and Gareth McAuley (NI Under-19s) this week.
Both were fabulous players for their country and played at the highest level in England.
Thomas managed St Johnstone and Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, bringing valuable experience and expertise to the position.
But they were also students of the Irish League.
Thomas was at Brantwood before joining Linfield, and it was while playing for the Swifts that he was scouted by Newcastle to start his stellar career in England.
Gareth was with me at Linfield before arriving at Ballyclare, Crusaders and Coleraine. Then came his move to Lincoln City after impressing in the Irish League.
Both Thomas and Gareth know that the Irish League can develop some fine young talent — we’ve witnessed in recent years the likes of Gavin Whyte, Shayne Lavery, Paul Smyth and Trai Hume — and I have no doubt they will ensure that the Irish Premiership is represented on the international stage.
In these under-age squads, it’s important for young players to have expert guidance, support and leadership. Thomas and Gareth will provide that.
Therefore, Michael O’Neill has chosen wisely, and the appointments of Thomas and Gareth can only be good news for the Irish League.
