The German FA have acted swiftly in the wake of Germany’s 4-1 home defeat to Japan to sack their head coach Hansi Flick. The former Bayern Munich head coach has been relieved of his duties after just over two years in the job.
Arsenal, who once had a whole contingent of German stars like Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski, Per Mertesacker and Serge Gnabry, have now just one in Kai Havertz who arrived this summer. With Germany hosting the 2024 Euros, there’s a great focus on the nation to perform and after five games without a win, including defeats to Belgium, Poland, Columbia and the aforementioned Japan, Flick has gone.
With that in mind, football.london takes a look at how the decision will make an impact in north London. It might not be immediately obvious how the sacking of an international coach can make waves over here, but that’s what might surprise.
Kai Havertz role in question
What isn’t surprising is the impact on Kai Havertz. The Arsenal new boy has been Flick’s centre-forward of choice despite his own drawbacks and poor club form.
He again failed to catch the eye in the defeat to Japan after several uninspiring Arsenal displays. With a change of coach will come a clean slate for the squad and where Havertz had been given the nod by Flick, the same might not be the case for the new coach.
Arsenal supporters might take solace in fewer minutes for Havertz, lowering the chance of injury. But with playing the only solution to poor form, a lack of games for Die Mannschaft could be a drawback rather than a benefit.
