I think we can all agree that what happened after an hour of play between Chelsea and Everton at Stamford Bridge on Monday night was embarrassing. Chelsea, already 4-0 up, won a penalty after Cole Palmer had been felled by Abdoulaye Doucoure.
And not for the first time this season there ensued an argument over who was going to take it. Raheem Sterling took the ball from Palmer against Leicester City in the FA Cup and proceeded to see his spot-kick saved. Noni Madueke made a case to take the shot in the build-up to Palmer's crucial penalty in the 4-3 win over Manchester United.
This time around, Sterling was nowhere to be seen, but Nicolas Jackson instead took the ball, wanting to take it. Madueke, thinking he had won the penalty himself given there were two incidents in the box, went over to Jackson and snatched the ball away from him.
Madueke then had to contend with captain Conor Gallagher and Palmer — Chelsea's actual penalty taker. Palmer eventually won the day, with the help of his skipper, pushing Madueke away and coolly converting from 12 yards.
Yes, Chelsea were 4-0 up and Palmer had already scored a hat-trick and it could have been the perfect opportunity for someone like Jackson, or Madueke, to get some added confidence into their games. But Madueke has scored in the last game against Sheffield United and Jackson scored in the first half against Everton too.
The fact is Palmer is Chelsea's designated penalty taker and has not missed from 12 yards this season. There's also another factor — he's in the race to win the Golden Boot, which surely all of his teammates would love to see happen?
