Tottenham have put themselves into a very good position in the Premier League table with seven games of the 2023/24 campaign to go. In a battle with Aston Villa for the final Champions League spot, Ange Postecoglou's side are now fourth following their 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday evening.
Spurs took full advantage of Villa's 3-3 draw with Brentford 24 hours earlier, which in turn has seen them move level on points with Unai Emery's team but ahead of them on goal difference. The Lilywhites crucially have a game in hand to come against Chelsea at the beginning of next month and that fixture at Stamford Bridge could prove key in regards to the final Premier League table.
There is of course the possibility that finishing fifth this season is enough for a place at Europe's top table in the 2024/25 season. As the Champions League is expanding, four extra places are up for grabs.
Two of the positions will be given to the leagues that have performed best across all three of UEFA's club competitions this season in the European Performance Spots. The hope will be that the Premier League triumphs with one of the two extra positions, thus seeing whoever finishes fifth between Tottenham and Aston Villa still secure a Champions League place despite missing out on the top four.
