English football is in the spotlight. 'The Sun' has reported that two Premier League players were arrested last weekend after being accused of an alleged rape. The British tabloid has indicated that both 19-year-old players are teammates.
One of the players was questioned by police at his club's stadium on suspicion of assault and complicity in rape. The individual was eventually arrested and spent the night in custody before being subjected to further questioning by officers.
The second footballer in question, accused of an alleged rape, was arrested a day later and also had to submit to questioning by law enforcement agencies. Both were eventually released on bail pending further developments in the investigation.
'The Sun' reports that the crime took place on Friday night and the alleged victim contacted the authorities to lodge a complaint hours after the incident. "Officers have arrested two men following a report of rape," a police spokesman told the newspaper.
The club to which both players belong has chosen to be cautious. "As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the club will not comment further at this stage," one of the club's representatives told the newspaper.
