Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham players will have to wait until Wednesday to take to the pitch once again following the cancellation of their pre-season friendly vs Leicester City. Coming up against the Foxes at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, heavy rainfall in the area put paid to the contest.
Initially set to get underway at 11am (5pm local time), the players remained inside while the ground staff tried to clear as much surface water as possible from the field of play. Despite their attempts to clear the water and repaint the lines, it was all in vain as the match was officially cancelled 40 minutes after the scheduled kick-off time following an inspection.
Footage from inside the stadium had showed the ball not even bouncing on the surface when officials inspected the pitch, thus leading to the cancellation of the fixture as the pitch was in no fit state to hold a game of football. Following the decision, Tottenham released a statement to explain the decision.
«Our friendly against Leicester City has been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch and adverse weather conditions,» read a statement on the club's official website. «The event organisers, based on a recommendation from the match officials, deemed the pitch at the Rajamangala National Stadium unplayable and unsafe following heavy rainfall in Bangkok.»
Seconds before the confirmation had come through about the cancellation, players from both sides emerged from the tunnel and it raised hope that the encounter would indeed take place. However, the reason for both sides coming back out into the stadium was to take part in a lap of honour to thank the travelling fans for their attendance.
