Arsenal fans have shown their support for Aaron Ramsdale after he returned to the starting XI against Brentford. The England international was handed his first start in three games after being replaced by David Raya following the international break.
Raya was eligible to start against his parent club in the Carabao Cup third round clash at the Gtech Community Stadium — but Arteta opted to start Ramsdale ahead of the Spaniard. A lot has been said about the Arsenal boss' ruthless decision to replace Ramsdale in the team after his contributions last season helped the Gunners qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2017.
Jamie Carragher believes Arteta was right to bring in Raya over the summer as the Arsenal goalkeeping debate rumbles on. Raya joined Arsenal from Brentford on loan for an initial fee of £3million and it's understood the Gunners have an option to buy the Spaniard for £27million next summer.
The topic was a point of discussion for the likes of Roy Keane, Jill Scott, Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Carragher on their new show 'Stick to Football', part of Sky Sports' The Overlap. «Look at the difference with Alisson coming in at Liverpool,» Carragher said.
«Look at the difference with Ederson coming in at Manchester City. It completely changed where those clubs were going. Whether Raya is as good as them or can get to that level we'll see but they need a top goalkeeper.»
Many Arsenal fans have been left torn over Arteta's decision to replace Ramsdale with Raya — but the supporters gave the England international a brilliant reception as he returned to the starting XI. The away section were heard singing Ramsdale's chant on his first touch of the ball — along with singing England's No.1.
