What Ben White is like in England squad as Arsenal man's role explained after Gareth Southgate snub

Conor Coady has spoken about how Arsenal defender Ben White adapted to the England squad. The Gunners star turned down the opportunity to be considered for the Three Lions during the latest international break.

White has been a cornerstone of the Arsenal backline that boasts the best defensive record in the Premier League, both in terms of the fewest goals conceded and the most clean sheets. The right-back has also developed a fruitful partnership with Bukayo Saka, which could benefit Gareth Southgate’s side.

That is part of the reason why there have been concerns about White’s decision to turn down a possible call-up, especially in the final international break before Euro 2024. White was part of the England squads at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup but left the latter tournament due to personal reasons. Former England teammate Coady has given an insight into White’s role within the group.

“When I was in the England squad and he was, he was a great character to have around the place,” Coady told BBC Sport, as reported by the Daily Mail. “He is a great lad, first and foremost. How he trains, how he goes on about his business, he is top top drawer.”

Asked if he was saddened by White’s decision, Coady added: “Yeah, because I think he is a phenomenal player. What he is doing at this moment in time with Bukayo Saka down the right-hand side for Arsenal is, I think, incredible, and he deserves to play for his country.”

England have a wealth of right-back options, including Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, meaning White will always face fierce competition for his place. However, injuries to Alexander-Arnold and Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier would have bolstered White’s chances of game time. Instead, Southgate was forced
